One of the topics President Trump mentions is how members of NATO should increase spending. Have we reached a point where NATO is no longer needed? With the development of nuclear weapons, nations are assured mutual destruction. If anything, future wars between superpowers may only last a few days, or even a few weeks. Humanity has reached a point where we can destroy entire cities with nuclear weapons in minutes as compared to weeks or months with conventional bombs. Why should NATO increase spending when we have enough nuclear devices to destroy the world dozens of times over.
The world is experiencing an era of peace like has never been experienced before. Part of that peace my be due to the development of nuclear weapons. So why do we need thousands of tanks, ships, planes... etc? Any invading nation into Europe could face the wrath of limited nuclear bombardment.
Rather than spending more money on building military weapons, why not spend that money on science, medical research, aiding developing nations so they do not have to burn coal... etc. Humanity could turn Africa into the worlds breadbasket for the price of just a few nuclear missiles, or aircraft carriers.
How many tractors and irrigation pumps could be bought instead of one jet fighter?
How many homes could be built for the needy instead of bombs?
How many students could be sent to college for free instead of buying weapons of war?
